Breaking the Bracket: Writing Program

Breaking the Bracket: Writing Program is inviting young and emerging Nepali writers writing in Nepali and/or English to participate in a year-long program.

The writing program is focused on building a community of writers who are interested in creating feminist writing that will inspire the next generation of feminists.  Through reading and writing seminars, immersive artistic experiences, and residencies, writers will be able to come together to read, discuss and work on their craft. In addition, the organizers hope that the program will lead to the creation of a long-lasting circle of new voices in Nepali literature.

Around 8 to 10 young emerging writers will be a part of this program. Throughout the program, writers will work to create a substantial piece of writing (of at least 4,000 words). Towards the end of the program, their writing will be pushed for publication as part of an anthology.

Writers between the ages of 18 to 30 who have not published a full-length book of their own are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to women, trans* and intersex writers. Writers must be of Nepali origin and must have lived in Nepal during their adolescence and must be residing in Nepal for the year of 2018.

There is no application or participation fee to be a part of this program. While the program will cover the transportation, accommodation and basic meals during the writing residencies, participants will have to arrange for their own transportation and meals during the other components of the program. Participants living outside of Kathmandu Valley can apply for a travel grant to be a part of the program.
